Just like any other legacy, Cassirer’s ”philosophy of symbolic forms” is both meaningful and partially opaque, and needs to be reinterpreted in new ways in order to stay alive. […] I shall therefore try to be as faithful as I can to the spirit of what I regard as the core of his philosophical research and ignore its letter when I find it restricting, for it is only natural that exploration should take precedence over erudition.
